DESCRIPTION
On the first night of the Salkantay trek in Peru, we stayed at a base camp before climbing over the Salkantay pass the next day. I took this picture from the camp just as the sunlight was disappearing and there was a glow around the Salkantay mountain which made it seem like it was alive.
The details in the glaciers covering the mountain were incredible and the whole scene didn’t even seem real. About an hour before I took this picture, there was a rain storm in the area and you couldn’t see any of the surrounding mountains or scenery. All of a sudden, however, it cleared up and we got our first and last clear view of the Salkantay. The next day we walked right below the base of the mountain and saw it breifly from time to time between cloud breaks but never quite as clear as it’s shown in this shot.
