DESCRIPTION

A few years ago, Hilary and I made our first trip through Europe with our last stop being Prague in the Czech Republic. Lots of people say that Prague is the most beautiful city in Europe and they’re probably not wrong.

Charles Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in Prague and connects the Old Town to the Prague Castle.

On this particular morning, we were planning to spend the day exploring the castle and woke up quite early to hopefully beat a few of the crowds. This was the first time that we had actually seen the bridge without mobs of people on it. Usually, there are so many people on the bridge that it takes about 20 minutes to cross it and you can’t even see the cobble-stones of the bridge because there are so many people closely surrounding you.

Lots of people call Prague the city of spires and I think this photo demonstrates why that is. The buildings at the end of the bridge are just small sample, but you can clearly see that the skyline of the city is dominated by dozens of spires every way you turn.

I’ve never been very good and black and white photos, but I’ve slowly learned that as you taken the colour out of the photo, it’s the structure of the photo that stands out. This means that a photo that is relying on its colour (like a sunrise photo with reds and oranges in the sky) won’t look very good when it’s coverted to black and white. But, if a photo has lots of structure, like this one with the grid of cobblestones and the distinct outline of buildings and statues, then it will look good in either black and white, or in colour.
