The FIX 07: Sunrise at Vermillion Lakes in Banff
Focus of Episode: Getting a “Cold Morning” Look in Lightroom
In this episode of The FIX, I show you the editing behind a shot that was posted as Photo of the Week on February 5th, called Rundle Mountain from Vermillion Lakes in Banff. I took the photo on a trip to Canmore when I decided to get up early one winter morning to head out to Vermillion to catch the sunrise. This is probably the most popular sunrise photo spot in the Banff area as you get some pretty awesome views out towards Rundle and across the lakes. It’s also really easy to access and you can see and hear the traffic on the TransCanada Highway just above you. The lakes are also quite marshy and swampy so it’s quite an underwhelming place and far from the picturesque quiet outdoors that I usually picture when I think of Banff. But there’s something about the view across the lake towards Rundle that is always so amazing in photos.
I ended up keeping the editing in this photo very simple and used the cold blue in the photo to create a moody feeling to the photo. All of the editing was done in Lightroom and was quite a simple process. I go through all of the steps in this episode, however, and also do some local adjustments to bring out the features in the clouds, as well as the reflections in the water.
