The FIX 04: The Blue Ice of Exit Glacier
Focus of Episode: Basic Lightroom Edit and Local Adjustments
In this episode of The FIX, I show you the editing behind a shot that was posted as Photo of the Week on September 4th, called The Blue Ice of Exit Glacier. I took the photo in the summer of 2015 on a trip to Alaska with Hilary.
Alaska is filled with awesome peaks and glaciers, but not all of them are very easily accessible. Luckily, Exit Glacier is and you can walk all along the edge of the glacier until you get to the top and have an awesome view over the entire Harding Ice Field which seems to stretch out endlessly in front of you. The glacier itself is only a short drive from the coastal town of Seward and you can drive to the base of the glacier where the walk starts. This picture was taken about half way up the walk when we stopped for some lunch on the grass with a view out over the glacier. The ice is incredibly blue, and most of the editing that goes into this photo is focussed on bringing out those details and colours in the ice.
The editing of the photo is very simple and is done solely in Lightroom. I start out with a basic edit to get the entire image looking roughly how I want it. And then I dig into the local adjustments to tweak small areas of the photo separately. There is some work done with radial filters, graduated filters, and some brushing.
