While Hilary and I were still living in New Zealand, we decided to take a trip to South East Asia. Part of the reason was because our working holiday visas were up so we had to leave the country. We also just wanted to do a bit of travelling before heading home to Canada for Christmas, and “Cheap” was the name of the game and South East Asia definitely lived up to that.
We started out in Singapore, Myanmar, and Thailand, the headed over to Vietnam which was one of our last stops of the trip. It ended up being one of our favourite spots, however, and everything from the food, the people, and the gorgeous countryside, coastlines, and towns exceeded our expectations.
We started out in Ho Chi Minh and travelled the country from South to North, ending in the city of Hanoi. In between, we stopped in the beach town of Nah Trang, explored the waterways and karst limestone pillars of Ninh Binh, wandered around the peaceful lantern lit streets of Hoi An (our new favourite town!), and headed up to Sapa for some cooler temperatures and rice fields. Finally, we checked out Cat Ba island as an alternative to the famous Ha Long Bay before spending a few days in Hanoi exploring its Old Quarter.
